Dambulla caves

After Kandy we stopped off in Dambulla, to go and see the Dambulla cave temples.
In the first Centuty, King Valagambahu hid in the caves in area for 15 years when under attack. After reclaiming his capital he converted the caves into temples.

The giant Golden Buddha - nice and shiny in the sun!

The entrance to the 5 caves of the cave temple.

Very nice water lillies in the pond here!

Inside the caves- There are 153 Buddha statues packed into 5 fairly small caves

Buddha's feet

This is the roof of the cave, Sistine Chapel style! I love how the natural curves of the rock and the painting make it look like cloth.

Some really nice door fittings here as well

Outside the caves, which are fairly high up, so offer some fantastic views.
