The Atomium

On the 2nd day in Brussels, Dad and Kobus went off to see a Chagall and a Magritte exhibition, while Marie and I went to the Atomium. This was a super impressive structure, built in 1958 for the World Fair. Took then 19 months to build, and they were going to tear it down after the fair, but luckily it was so popular they kept it up.
The name Atomium comes from Atom and Aluminium combined.
It was a fairly rainy day, so we were pleased you could go in and explore around in the balls.

The balls inside had different exhibitions - one was about the building of the Atomium, so above is a snippet of the plans.

cool 1950s art - the Atomium made out of meatballs and cutlery.

One of the balls had a mini-art exhibition - an x-ray of 2 people kissing, for example.

Kids can spend the night inside on special trips. They get to sleep inside these bed-balls - lucky kids!

Ah, a map, useways useful in case you get lost!

Going down the funky escalators in the tubes - check the video at the bottom for the full experience!

From the viewing sphere at the top, you can see mini-Europe!
Looks kids, th Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Leaning Tower of Pisa - what else can you spot?

Hmmm, no stabbing people in the stomach?

I'd love to sleep in one of those mini balls. And I love the mini Europe.
