Galle

From Unawatuna we popped off to Galle for a few hours, to walk around the old town. Galle is a ery Dutch town, surrounded by an old fort.

Galle cricket stadium. You can sit on the old fort walls and watch the match for free :o)
Sri Lank is cricket Mad. Every single Sri Lankan who hears you are from SA proceeds to lists a bunch of cricket players - they tend to prefer the old school ones, particularly Hansie Cronje, and even Andrew Hudson was remembered!
On Sri lankan TV, there seem to be four 24 hour a day cricket channels, showing all sorts of matches from anywhere and any time!

 Old Dutch church

 That's a massive tree!

As you can see, we went on a pretty overcast windy day. As we left, a massive downpour broke out, and we got well drenched, and had to shelter in a service station for a while.

Some of the old walls are made using corals and shells and such - impressive!

 Nice old roofing

The structure of the fort reminded me a bit of Cape Town castle - you can see the point has a similar structure to the points of the castle

As we were sitting in a nook in the wall, we were lucky enough to hear the revelrie (or whatever its called) as they lowered the flag. A lovely moment indeed.
