It is advised to head up Sigiriya early in the morning or late evening, as apparently its tough work and gets really hot - luckily it was not as bad heading up as envisaged, although some water breaks were definately required.

Halfway up is a small cave in the cliff face, with old paintings of concubines - seems to me that breast implants were popular in 5th century Sri Lanka!
Just a bit above halfway is the Lion Staircase, leading up to the final section of the climb.
Also, hundreds of hornets like to hang around the lion staircase, much to Boet's delight!
4 huge hornets nests, each one nearly half a meter tall I recon. And there were more that just these 4!
Have a look at this video of one of the hornets nest - the black is not actually the nest itself, but hornets galore. If you watch carefully, you can see the surface of the hornets ripple as they move around - not an encouraging site when you are on a small staircase close by with not many options to escape.
